Hello my crafty friend! Welcome to the Spellbinders May Clubs Blog Hop! Today, I’m sharing a fun technique for quick and easy cards; I call it repetitive die cutting. You can adapt it to any color scheme, fit it to your favorite card size, and even swap out the dies to change the look. I’ve got some tips to keep in mind below. But first, let’s take a look at my finished card…
My card features the round window insert from Spellbinder’s May Small Die of the Month. You know how I love to color my own die cuts, but in order to speed up the process (remember, I promised it was quick and easy?), I die cut it from a rainbow of scraps in my stash. The textured cardstock, along with the embossed details from the die, really make these circles look like tiny doilies. I could have left them a solid color, but I like the added dimension we get from shading. It only took a few minutes to run a coordinating Copic marker around the bottom of each wheel. While I was at it, I brushed over each one with a shimmer pen too.
To pull the card together, I trimmed a white panel to 3 1/8″ x 8 1/8″ and stamped HAPPY BIRTHDAY near the bottom, using the May Clear Stamp of the Month. After gluing on most of the wheels, I popped three up with thin foam tape, then trimmed off any overhanging areas. I mounted the panel onto a 3 1/2″ x 8 1/2″ kraft slimline card base with more thin foam tape. A few round and heart-shaped iridescent gems finish the card and add more sparkle. Easy peasy! Here are some closeups…

Okay, now for those tips. First, decide on the die you would like to use. I suggest a shape that doesn’t need to be layered, or colored to tell what it is. If you choose a small die, you’ll need to cut more to cover your card front; something in the 1″ – 2″ range will work nicely. Next, decide on your card size. My card today is a standard slimline, but it would have translated just as well into an A2, A6, or even a mini-slimline card, with a few more or less circles. Lastly, the color choices for the die cuts will guide the overall feel of your card. Rainbows are always fun, but this same card would become more masculine if you cut the wheels from grey and silver to mimic gears, and set them on a black background . Need a graduation card? Swap the sentiment to CONGRATULATIONS and use the school’s colors. See what I mean? You can use this design for lots of different cards, and they’ll come together in a snap!
I encourage you to flip through your stash and see what you’ve got that will work for the repetitive die cutting technique. (And don’t forget to use up the scraps of cardstock you’ve been hanging on to.) If you find your stash lacking, check out Spellbinders Monthly Clubs. They have some really fun new stamps and dies each month. (Order by May 24th to receive the stamps and dies used in my card today.) I’ll be sharing more ideas with them over the next few months, in case you want to follow along.
