Slimline Birthday Cards

Hello my crafty friend! It’s hard to believe that this time last year, I was working on my first set of cards to help The Rabbit Hole Designs launch their grand opening. To celebrate their first birthday, I made a bunch of birthday cards with stamps and stencils from the new release that I’ll be sharing all week. The first two are both slimline (designed to fit into a #10 letter envelope).

Considering that today is my niece’s sixth birthday, I’ll start with the card I made for her. I stamped and Copic colored a cake and six candles from the Celebrate with Cake stamp set. Then I cut them out with my ScanNCut. I used a fancy scalloped rectangle die to cut out the white panel. Since my die isn’t long enough for a slimline card, I extended it by partially cutting, then moving the die and cutting the rest of the panel. (To partially cut, only cover part of the die with your top plate when running it through your die cutting machine. Any portion of the die that isn’t covered by the top plate will not be cut out.) I used the Spell It stencil to spell out the word SIX. Then, I embossed the sentiment onto a banner with white powder. The cake and banner were popped up with foam tape and the panel was glued to a pink card base. I added some Aqua Shimmer highlights and a few pastel sequins to finish the card. I can’t wait to give this card to my niece. She always wants to see the new cards I’ve made when she comes over to visit.

The second card I made is a little more masculine. I used three colors of ink and the new Drop It stencil to create my background panel. Since the stencil is not wide enough for slimline cards, I moved the stencil over as I went. I used Scattered Straw ink first, then rotated the stencil 90° and added Twisted Citron ink. I rotated the stencil again and added Mowed Lawn for the third color. To add more interest, I splattered on gold watercolor. I cut the panel down with a stitched rectangle die (again using the partial die cutting technique to extend it to the correct length). I used the Scripty Happy Birthday set to emboss my sentiment in gold. After I popped the panel up on a kraft base, I added a few gold sequins to finish the card. You can switch up the colors to make it more feminine if you’d like. Imagine it in shades of pinks and orange. No matter what scheme you go with though, it’s a good idea to use colors that will blend nicely, since the tiles overlap.

I will tell you, using Pixie Spray on the back of my stencils and soft makeup brushes to apply the ink made it very easy to work with these stencils. I definitely recommend both if you are using stencils with thin lines or details you want to keep crisp.

Okay, now on to the fun stuff! If you’re ready for more inspiration, hop along with us to see all of the great projects created by the design team. And remember to comment as you go, to be entered to win! (Details and discount code below.)

  1. These stencils REALLY stand out to me in an amazing way. I LOVE how the letters look like I’m looking through blinds. and the tile look on the other is wonderful. The colors you use really change the look. LOVE them both.

  2. Kind of fun to have a different slimline card but with a room full of A2 stuff…not too many slimlines for a while for sure. 🙂 These designs are both delightful. What an interesting stencil!

  3. I love what you did with the stenciling! Slimline cards are so fun!

  4. Your niece will love her card, such a pretty palette! Your slimline cards are fab!

  5. SWEET cards Amanda! Will need to check out the new releases, stencils have become my new thing lately! Love the “SIX” spelling option too ?

  7. Amanda, I adore the birthday card for your niece, those bright fun colors are so pretty together and love the use of the letters from the stencil to spell out the age. The more masculine card, well that’s just fun and what a great way to use the stencil and turn it and ink blend with multiple colors, and that sentiment of just perfect. I need to make some long, slimmer cards, these are such fun

  8. I really like the slimline cards but usually don’t see many examples out there for them. So, thank you for the ideas!!! I like the way you used the different colors with the Drop It stencil. Super good idea to make a more masculine card which definitely gets the short end with most card makers.

  9. Such an adorable birthday card for your niece! Congrats to The Rabbit Hole Designs on their anniversary!! They have so many fun designs!

  10. I love the fact that you added a number to your 1st card. Great job
