How ‘Bout Them Apples?

Hello crafty friends! If you are following along with the August Get Kids Crafty! blog hop or looking for ways to butter up your new teachers, you’re in the right spot! If you’re here for the Lawn Fawn giveaway, you’re also in the right place! (Details below.)

As summer draws to a close, it’s time to start thinking about going back to school. We’ve been having so much fun soaking up the sun, building pillow forts, camping, swimming, sailing, and crafting that I don’t want it to end… But if I’m being totally honest, my favorite part of summer is being able to sleep in. Pretty soon we’ll have to start waking up early and wading through extra traffic. My only solace is knowing Pumpkin Spice season is right around the corner too.

In an effort to start the new school year off right, Kelly has decided a little preemptive bribery is in order. She also has her own Etsy store where she sells painted flower pots. Her best sellers have been her watermelon and pineapple pots but, for fall she wanted to add something a little less summery to the mix. She decided an apple pot would be perfect and the first one will go to her new teacher!

Normally, Kelly has been painting her pots with outdoor acrylic paints but, at Creativation this year, she won 36 cans of spray paint, the entire new line from Krylon! Woohoo! They just arrived and she couldn’t wait to play with them. She painted the inside of her pot a creamy white color, then sprayed the outside with Candy Apple Shimmer Metallic. Being her first go with spray paint, she was a little close and didn’t know to shake the can before, and during application. (Lol, no time to wait for help from Mom.) The result is a slightly bumpy texture and some areas have more silver and less red. It’s actually pretty cool but, she wants to try for a smoother texture next time. To finish her apple, she glued part of a cinnamon stick and some flat green marbles to the lid. She used a paint pen to add a few seeds inside the pot. Really cute, right? #teacherspet

To accompany the pot, I thought an apple card would be sweet. The card is mostly die cut pieces, with only two stamped images. This card has several delicate pieces floating at the top, so to give it more structural support, I cut and stacked several layers of each of the smaller parts. To give the back of the card a cleaner look, the bottom layers are all cut from red cardstock.

I used nesting heart dies to cut out my card front, back, and a smaller white apple core. Then I ran the die cuts through a second time, making a partial cut and creating the dip at the bottom to give the hearts more of an apple shape. Tiny grey hearts stamped on the white apple look like seeds. I cut two small banners from brown and red cardstock, then stamped and embossed my sentiment on the brown banner. The brushstroke teacher die is so cute; I knew it would make a great leaf if I cut it from green pattern paper. I also cut out a second one from red stock too. The bow on the front of the card seemed like the perfect addition to dress it up a little. I cut the pieces from pattern paper, glued them together, and set it aside until the end.

Once all my pieces were cut and prepped, I started gluing them together. Teacher is glued to the banner, the banner is tucked between the white apple and a red apple. I scored a line about 1/4″ from the left edge of that apple and glued the scored edge to the front card piece. Last, I glued my bow to the front. That’s it! It was quick and fun to make. Now all we need to do before summer ends is a little back to school shopping! (Thank goodness for Amazon!)

  20. This is such a fun craft project and I really like the way she painted that flowerpot to look like an apple. The matching card makes a gift her teacher will never forget. Using a heart die to make the apple shape is such a great way to stretch your dies, and is a tip I’ll remember.

What a great idea to use a heart die for the apple shape. I’ll have to remember this tip for my own use. Back to school for me means altered notebooks and teacher appreciation gifts. Thank you for all the inspiration!
