Let’s Celebrate with Cake

Can you believe The Rabbit Hole Designs is two years old? It seems like just yesterday that we were getting ready for the grand opening, and now they are having their second birthday party. Let’s celebrate with cake! A light up cake, that is…

To help kick off the party, I made a fun slimline light-up card featuring the Just Cake stamp set and EZ-Lights! Don’t worry, as the name suggests, it was easy. I’ll walk you through the steps…

In my new Misti 2.0 (merry Christmas to me!!!), I stamped the cake and three candles with Warm Glow ink. I colored them with Copic markers for a soft, no-line coloring effect, and added white gel pen highlights to the frosting and candles. After cutting them out with the coordinating dies, I glued the candles to the top of the cake and punched holes in the flames (the lights will sit behind these holes). I also stamped PUSH ME at the bottom of the cake, to indicate where the button for the lights will be. So far, not hard, right?

Next, I flipped the cake over and taped an EZ-Light in place. I lined the button up right under where I stamped PUSH HERE, and used Scor-Tape to adhere it to the back of the cake. Thin pieces of Scotch Tape hold the lights in place on the candles. I curled up the extra wires and used more tape to hold them down. That’s it, the “hard part” is over.

I wanted to pop the cake up, so I applied a few pieces of double thick foam tape around the edges (the battery unit is the same thickness).

Bonus tip: if you want to mail a card like this, and keep the battery from running down, tuck a strip of cardstock in the unit, under the battery and allow it to stick out. Write REMOVE on the strip so your recipient knows to pull it out. Do not remove the release paper from the foam tape where the strip sticks out, or it will be locked in place. It’s easiest to do this before you attach the cake to the card.

To pull the card together, I stamped a sentiment on a 3¼” x 8¼” panel, then dry embossed it with the Party Time stencil by running it through my die cutting machine with a squishy pad (one of my favorite stencil techniques!). I glued the panel to a 3½” x 8½” slimline card base and adhered the cake in place.

To help the whole flame glow on each candle, I glued clear raindrop gems on top. They are the perfect shape, and when you place them over a light, the entire gem will glow.

Isn’t it a cool effect?

What do you think? Isn’t it a fun birthday card? Are you ready to keep the party going? Hop along with the team and I to see all of the fun creations with The Rabbit Hole Designs’ birthday release!
