Let’s Get Crackin’

Hey crafty friends, welcome back to another Get Kids Crafty blog hop! This month our theme is Winter, so Kelly and I decided to make some Christmas Crackers for our holiday dinner table. Christmas is in winter; it counts, right?

When I say holiday crackers, I’m talking about little gifts at each place setting, not the baked wafers served with cheese. (Although, we often put those out at the holidays too. 😉 ) Crackers are traditional in many European countries and have been catching on here in the US in recent years. Typically, you pull on both ends and hear a loud pop when you open it. Inside, you find candy, tiny toys, a tissue paper crown, and a joke or fortune.

I usually buy some for Christmas dinner, but this year Kelly and I wanted to make our own! As soon as I saw the new Animal Box die from Lynda Kanase, I knew I wanted to use it to make our crackers! They aren’t the normal candy shape; they are so much cuter! To get the required “POP,” I ordered cracker snaps from an Etsy seller. (Don’t worry, you can still get everything you need in time for Christmas!) We think these would make fun Valentines too as long as you warn the teacher first (also a winter holiday 😉 )

Here is a quick video showing you how we made them and how they work.
